In 1999, a researcher at MIT named Kevin Ashton coined the term Internet of Things and surmised that everyday items like car keys and washing machines and mismatched socks would all belong to a vast sensor network.
Ashton had originally pinned his hopes on short-range, low-power RFID transmitters, but we’ve come a long way since then. Today, companies are producing an incredible array of wireless sensors with longer ranges and longer battery lives. Standard sonar sends 1 single frequency at a time. Since the only feedback is from this 1 single frequency, there is little information to work with, limiting the clarity and resolution available with standard sonar.
